IWAI to enhance safety measures along NW III

The Hindu
The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) would enhance safety measures along the National Waterway III to prevent accidents involving vessels that transport hazardous cargo. This comes in the backdrop of a barge ferrying sulphur to FACT getting entrapped beneath Kaniampuzha railway bridge early on Saturday morning. It was extricated from the bridge’s column base during high tide on Saturday night, by which time movement of barges in the corridor was hit and dozens of trains suffered delay following imposing of speed restriction over the bridge. The Director of IWAI Neelakandan Unni said the incident appears to be an error of judgment of the vessel’s master during night time. “The clearance beneath the bridge is the narrowest in the sector. Moreover, a 150 metre-long corridor here is a navigational challenge since there is a road overbridge, two railway bridges and a bridge that supports BPCL pipelines. The presence of too many piers in close proximity results in water having ‘tunneling effect’ and its velocity increases faster.”
